Pollution Prevention Awards for Environmental Excellence

In our efforts to implement environmentally preferable purchasing practices, EPA Region 7's pollution prevention awards are made of wood which has been reclaimed from pallets and shipping crates.
The Pollution Prevention Act of 1990 declares that "pollution should be prevented or reduced at the source whenever possible."

This can include new technologies that save energy and other resources, product reformation or substitutions that use less toxic materials, and new procedures or modifications that reduce pollution and ensure the safety of human health and our environment. EPA recognizes that recycling can be an important first step in reaching the ultimate goal of source reduction.

The opportunities for pollution prevention are abundant in all sectors of economic life - in industry, agriculture, transportation, consumer products design, in transportation and energy, and in our homes, schools, offices, stores and factories.

The following summaries are excellent representations of the ways pollution can be prevented or reduced at the source whenever possible.

The Pella Corporation installed a series of activated carbon filters for chromium recovery from their industrial wastewater. The filters remove 99% of the heavy metals by absorption. The effluent is recycled. Spent filters are shipped off-site and regenerated by a proprietary process which yields a metallic by product similar to raw chromium ore useable by various industries. This technology is a zero-release option.
